These segments are annoying, but they serve a rhetorical purpose. In Rogue, you have to stop being a super awesome fully equipped cold-weather murder pirate a couple of times to walk around slowly in an actionless office building solving tedious hacking puzzles, while your superior berates you. The flash-forward sections in every Assassin’s Creed game are never fun, and they are always singled out by reviewers for scorn. There’s always sections in these games, always, that cut back to the present day, where your real character is using a device called the Animus to mine genetic memories and experience the main action in the past. That’s the secret of the enduring appeal of Assassin’s Creed games, that they let you walk around and climb and jump and stab in an ever-growing list of historical settings while letting you carry the knowledge of later history with you. At no other time in history could a group from nearly every populated time zone in the world collaborate on a product this niche. Ubisoft isn’t blameless like any major international corporation (it’s still funny that their fictional stand-in for the games, Abstergo Industries, is a murderous Templar front) but to me at least there’s still something slightly inspiring about the boilerplate “designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various faiths and beliefs” title card that appears before every game.

That’s something it’s easy to forget to appreciate. Among other languages it was translated into Italian, Arabic, German, Dutch, and Spanish.

It was made in Bulgaria, Hungary, Singapore, and China and published by a Canadian company. Assassin’s Creed Rogue is set in North America, Portugal, and France. I was taking a step back to appreciate how modern and special these games are. So I’m going to do that, no question, but while watching the end credits roll, I wasn’t preoccupied about how the Templar treasure hunt in this title was poorly implemented. (Sure, Bat Out of Hell II is just as good as the original.
ASSASSINS CREED ROGUE THEME MOVIE
It’s easier to make an exact copy of a movie or a TV show or even a music album. It’s downright impossible to make one that plays exactly the same as another, except with new locations and content, even if that’s the stated intention of the designers. As complex an undertaking as they are, individual video games are like snowflakes. That’s part of being a fan of any long-running series. There are so many damn Assassin’s Creed games now that it’s easy to take them for granted and it’s guaranteed that anyone who has stuck around for the bulk of them is going to have pedantic complaints about whichever thing their favorite does that this latest one doesn’t do. And not least of all it’s a streamlined experience with few characters, a tight story, and a total time commitment one-tenth of that required for its more recent successors. It’s set on the frigid North Atlantic coast during the Seven Years War, a rich time period. It makes better use of many of the characters and assets from Assassin’s Creed III, which is plainly the worst. It’s very much an extension of ACIV: Black Flag, which I still rate as do many as the overall best game in the series. From its critical reputation, it sounded like exactly the kind of AC game they don’t make any more and I very much still like to play. Ever since I’ve thought about it wistfully. At the time, Rogue wasn’t a backwards-compatible title, so I ended up trading it in, still in the shrink wrap, since without a 360 I no longer had a console on which to play it. Before I could start playing it, I got an unexpected financial windfall and found myself with the resources to trade up for a brand-new Xbox One.

(Their little icon on the map looks just like the Vineyard Vines logo.) I got a copy of this game new in the waning era of the Xbox 360. So has been Rogue, whi ch I feel especially justified as describing as my white whale game seeing as within the game itself you may seek out and harpoon literal white whales. Who knows if I will ever finish Unity, or the vast amount of Odyssey downloadable content, or Black Flag’s much-loved Freedom Cry expansion, or any of the obnoxious side-scrolling games, but I assure you they are all on my hard drive.
ASSASSINS CREED ROGUE THEME SERIES
Ubisoft’s relentless release schedule led to even me, a dedicated series fan with ample free time, allowing a couple of titles to fall through the cracks. No new Assassin’s Creed game last year, which was a relief.
